We live in a culture deluged by sex—television shows and commercials with constant references to sexual behavior, music video channels averaging more than 90 sexual situations per hour, graphic pictures easily accessed on the Internet designed to attract teenagers—all producing a distorted sense of sex and what is normal and healthy.
[But,] the corrosive effects of the misuse of sex [are apparent] in people engaged for years in prostitution. I met a patient named Anthony at a county hospital years ago. At 17, he had spent several years on the street as a prostitute. He had already experienced terrific losses—of home and relationship with his parents, of health to HIV and AIDS, of hope to what he saw as the irreversible course of his life, and of peace to guilt and shame.
Anthony described to me a life filled with loneliness, hopelessness, and pain. No one would be able to convince Anthony that the way he used his sexuality produced anything but harm. But he was eventually transformed by the good news that God loved him so much that Jesus made the choice to live and die to set him free. Anthony died about a year later at peace, knowing he was loved and full of hope because of this good news.
