Why We Need the Spirit Theme of the week: Put the Spirit in Charge Sunday, September 16, 2012

Who Said It … Jim Cymbala
Jim Cymbala has served for more than 25 years as lead pastor of The Brooklyn Tabernacle, and his wife, Carol, directs the church's Grammy-winning choir. Jim's early love of basketball earned him a scholarship to the University of Rhode Island, where he became team captain. After a stint in the business world, he soon felt called into pastoral ministry—a calling that landed him in his leadership role at The Brooklyn Tabernacle. Jim is the author of several books including his recently released Spirit Rising.
What he Said … Why We Need the Spirit
The world is full of books about God the Father, and more books are written about Jesus the Son of God than anyone who ever walked on this planet. But isn't it interesting that far fewer books have been written about God the Holy Spirit?
Jesus declared; "If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13, NIV). You would think that promise would create a huge desire to know more about the Spirit.
We know Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father (Col. 3:1). So that means the Holy Spirit is the only way we can have the work of Jesus Christ applied to our lives and the only way we can understand God's Word. Without the Holy Spirit, we are like the disciples before Pentecost—sincere but struggling with confusion and defeat.
