More than Food Theme of the week: How to Talk to God Wednesday, December 5, 2012
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. (James 1:17) Dig Deeper: Psalm 73:23-26
Once we've addressed our Father, honored the fullness of who he is through his many names, and focused on his agenda, then Jesus tells us that it's time to ask God to meet our needs. "Give us this day our daily bread."
We're not merely asking God to [meet our need for food, here]. We're asking him to provide his presence and provision for us in all areas of our lives. Put simply, we should depend on him for everything, regularly. Bread gets stale and spoils if it's not eaten. We need fresh bread on a daily basis.
We tend to focus on the problems, the needs, the deficits, and the trials. But we don't need God's help only when we give the big presentation at work; we need him while we're driving to work, interacting with our assistant, meeting with our boss, talking on the phone, and returning e-mail. Jesus told us to pray in a way that acknowledges our Source. "God, everything I have comes from you. You're my source for all that I'm entrusted to steward. I wouldn't even get to work if you didn't give me breath to wake up this morning. You're my source for everything. So, Lord, give me today, and all that I need throughout it."

My Response: I will reflect on all the different ways God meets my need for "daily bread."
Thought to Apply: When [God's] people are without strength, without resources, without hope, without human gimmicks—then he loves to stretch forth his hand from heaven.—Dale Ralph Davis (pastor, professor, theologian)
