Family Check-ins
Theme of the week: What's Your Family's Purpose?
Friday, November 16, 2012

Key Bible Verse: "Teach [these words of mine] to your children, talking about them when you sit at home …." (Deuteronomy 11:19, NIV) Dig Deeper: Deuteronomy 11:13-22

For years now, the Turners have made Sunday night a family night and meeting time. They call themselves the "Turner Team," and talking about the family's mission has become common language for their young children. Sunday night is a check-in time to see how they are doing with their mission: To love God and love people. The review of the week keeps their purpose before them.

They've developed six questions to discuss at their family meetings each Sunday night:

  • How did we treat each other?
  • Did we show God's love?
  • Did we spend time with God?
  • What can we work on?
  • Did we make someone's day better?
  • How can we pray for each other?

Our family's evaluations are less structured and less frequent than the Turners', in part because our kids are older than theirs. But we are quite intentional about regularly sharing with one another the relationships we're building with others, and any spiritual progress lost or made with people outside our home. Establishing the mission is important; regular checkups keep it central to the family.

—Dave Stone in Building Family Ties with Faith, Love, and Laughter

My Response: How is my family doing at living for Christ and his kingdom? What could we do to regularly measure our progress?

Thought to Apply: Good, honest … character is a function of the home. If the proper seed is sown there and properly nourished for a few years, it will not be easy for that plant to be uprooted.—George A. Dorsey (anthropologist)
