The "If Only" Cycle Theme of the week: Seek Soul Satisfaction Tuesday, November 20, 2012
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: I have learned to be satisfied with the things I have and with everything that happens. (Philippians 4:11, NCV) Dig Deeper: Philippians 4:10-13
The Primitive Benedictines are known for their vow to a geographical location, meaning they agree to stay in one place for their entire lifetime. This profound contentment with and appreciation for where you are provides an antidote to the wanderlust of "I've got to get out of here."
Contentment is a conscious decision to rest in the providence of God, a humble embracing of the fact that we can learn lessons wherever we are. It doesn't entirely preclude working toward something "better," but it cultivates a spirit of thankfulness even in less-than-ideal situations.
Once we start on the cycle of "if only …," there is no stopping. We pray for a new job, but then imagine life would be much more pleasant if we got a promotion. Two weeks after the promotion, we realize the new boss is a jerk and think how much better it would be if we had a new supervisor. This obsessive rewriting of our desires and expectations can drive us crazy.
There is a place called contentment where ambitious strivings are replaced by firm resolution; daydreams of glory-filled service give way to patient and humble obedience; and restlessness transforms itself into peace.
Let's choose contentment.

My Response: What current circumstance is causing me to feel restless or unsatisfied? Why is this circumstance making me feel this way?
Thought to Apply: I just don't want to be where I am at any given moment. I would rather be somewhere else. There's no way to beat that problem because no matter where you are, it's chronic dissatisfaction.—Woody Allen (director, actor)
