The Messes We Make Theme of the week: Moving Forward after Bad Decisions Monday, November 5, 2012

Key Bible Verse: You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again. (Psalm 71:20) Dig Deeper: Psalm 32:8-11
On a recent airplane trip, the young woman seated next to me told me her story. She was pregnant, she said, after dating her boyfriend for about six months. He was willing to marry her, but she wasn't sure that she wanted to marry him.
"I want to be married for all the right reasons, not because we have to." If she married, she said, she'd have to settle for "second best." Faced with the realities of her situation, there was no obvious choice; one way or another, her future was "ruined."
Although I understood why she felt the way she did, I assured her that God is greater than the messes we create for ourselves and for others.
What this young woman was asking is, "How can I make the best of an unwise or hasty decision that had unintended consequences?" What happens when you can't just pull yourself up by your bootstraps, but instead feel as if you must spend the rest of your life in the ditch? Can you have the assurance that God will bless you even if your marriage has gone sour, or you've had a child out of wedlock, had an abortion, committed a crime, or made an investment decision that has left you in financial ruin?

Lord, help me to learn from my bad decisions and to trust that if I repent, you are faithful to bring something good out of even my poorest choices (Rom. 8:28).
