Who Said It … Tony Evans
Tony Evans is senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship of Dallas, Texas, a church with more than 9,000 members. He is also president of The Urban Alternative, a ministry dedicated to transforming individuals, families, churches, and communities through the Word of God. Tony is the author of numerous books including Kingdom Man and Oneness Embraced.
What he Said … Curing the Disease
I contend that the fundamental cause of racial problems in America lies squarely with the church's failure to come to grips with this issue from a biblical perspective. [The church has failed] to understand and execute a kingdom-based theology on both righteousness and justice. A balance between the two is absolutely critical since it is from God's kingdom throne that both righteousness and justice originate (Ps. 89:14).
White Christianity, with all its strengths, often focuses on personal righteousness at the exclusion of biblical justice. This is why a pastor can be fired for immorality but probably not for allowing segregation or other forms of injustice. And while there is much within the black culture that is to be celebrated, African American Christianity sometimes emphasizes social justice at the expense of personal responsibility.
Our racial divide is a disease. What we need is a prescription from the Creator to destroy the cancer before it destroys us.
If the church can ever get this issue of oneness right, then we can help America to finally become "one nation under God."
