Weekend Bible Study Theme of the week: The Secret to Joy-Filled Living Saturday, March 23, 2013
 1 of 1

In the NLT Study Bible, the introduction to Philippians says, "Paul wrote this poignant letter to encourage the persecuted Christians of the church in Philippi and strengthen them in the difficulties they faced. Paul wrote while in prison—he, too, was suffering for his faith—but he wrote with joy, demonstrating that a Christian can be passionate for Christ regardless of circumstances." While Paul penned our study passage a couple of millennia ago to a culture much different from ours, the principles he offers are as applicable as ever.
Key Study Passage:
Philippians 4:4-9
- What does it mean to "always be full of joy in the Lord" (v. 4)? Who do you know that seems to live this command? Why do you think this person is able to consistently demonstrate this command?
- Verse 6 tells us to pray rather than worry. According to this verse, what should be included in our prayer? According to verse 7, what happens when we genuinely exchange worry for prayer?
- According to verse 8, what should you "fix your thoughts on" and "think about"? How do you do this when you're having a bad day? When you're facing a major disappointment? Struggling with some bad news?
- Make a list of specific ways you can "keep putting into practice" (v. 9) the commands in verses 4, 6, and 8.
Spend Time in Prayer: Use Philippians 4:4 as a template for today's prayer—express any needs or concerns that are causing you to worry; thank God for specific ways he has blessed you and helped you in times of difficulty.
Philippians 4:4-9
4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
6 Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Father, help me to think about the good rather than the bad, the true rather than the false; even amid difficult and painful experiences, may I turn to you for hope, peace, and joy.
