The NLT's description for this psalm says, "A psalm of David, regarding a time when David was in the wilderness of Judah." Commentators disagree about whether David was fleeing from Saul (see 1 Sam. 23) or from Absalom (see 2 Sam. 15-16); but it's clear that David was in exile in the desert, and he was lonely and thirsty when he wrote this psalm.
