Key Bible Verses: Be happy with the wife you married when you were young. … Let her love always make you happy; let her love always hold you captive. (Proverbs 5:18-19, NCV)

Dig Deeper: Proverbs 5

One of the biggest complaints I hear in marriage is a lack of sexual intimacy. In their book Red-Hot Monogamy, Bill and Pam Farrel tell us that couples increase intimacy when they engage together in fun activities that involve bodily exertion.

Bodily activity produces endorphins—the "happy chemical." We know that physical activity increases physical health and, according to James White, Ph.D., "Research suggests that people who get regular aerobic exercise have more sex, better orgasms … than non-aerobic exercisers."

Another benefit of engaging in physical activity together is that it increases relational health by strengthening the bond of friendship between married lovers.

Instead of letting your dates get stuck in the rut of going out to eat and to the movies, plan dates that involve physical activity. If you have trouble thinking of recreational activities for the two of you to enjoy, Bill and Pam provide a list in their article, "Recreational Intimacy" on the Focus on the Family website.

(Editor's note: To find "Recreational Intimacy," search "recreational intimacy" at; the James White quote is taken from this article.)

Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, show my wife and me how we can strengthen our marriage; and even in difficult times, help us to still look at one another at the end of the day and say, "You are my best friend."
