If you were going to summarize what Christian character is and what it looks like, what would you say? How would you explain it? Consider this pithy and practical "definition" found in today's Key Study Passage: "Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Never say anything that isn't true. Have nothing to do with lies and misleading words. Look straight ahead with honest confidence; don't hang your head in shame. Plan carefully what you do, and whatever you do will turn out right. Avoid evil and walk straight ahead. Don't go one step off the right way" (GNT).

  1. In what ways do our thoughts shape our lives? How does our thinking impact the way we live? The words we use?
  2. When have you been misled by words? How did it affect you and your relationship with the person who said those words?
  3. When have you hung your head in shame because of your words or actions? What difficult lessons did you learn from the experience?
  4. What does careful planning have to do with the life of integrity?
  5. What should we do when we "step off the right way"? (See 1 John 1:9, James 4:8-10; 5:16.)
  6. Jot down your own plan of action for avoiding evil and walking the straight path of honesty.

Key Study Passage:

Proverbs 4:23-27

Spend Time in Prayer: Confess any times recently when you've lied or used misleading words. Ask God to reveal any changes you might need to make in order to live with "honest confidence."

Proverbs 4:23-27

23 Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
24 Keep your mouth free of perversity;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you.
26 Give careful thought to the[a] paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil.

Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, help me to admit my mistakes, guard my integrity, and always strive to be the same man in secret as I am before the watching world.
