Why do bad guys finish first? … How on earth does that jerk at the office get all the breaks? If you've ever had those kinds of thoughts (and who hasn't?), consider the first two verses of Psalm 37: "Do not fret when wicked men seem to succeed! Do not envy evildoers! For they will quickly dry up like grass, and wither away like plants" (NET). But the psalm isn't simply a rant against the bad guys of the world. It also challenges us to "trust in the LORD and do good" (v. 3). And amid the challenges are encouraging insights—like this one in verse 4: "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires."
- In what ways do wicked and evil men succeed and flourish in today's world? How do we see some of them getting their just deserts?
- Make two columns on a piece of paper and label one column "Characteristics of the Wicked" and the other "Characteristics of the Godly." Read the psalm twice and then write down characteristics that fit in each column.
- The psalm tells us that God "will never abandon the godly" (v. 28). How do we make sense of such statements when so many Christians face extreme difficulties and even persecution? (See Rom. 5:3-5; 1 Pet. 5:10; 2 Cor. 4:8-10.)
- Reflect on these verses: 1-2, 4, 5, 8, 23-24, 30-31, and 37. Pick a verse or verses to memorize.
Key Study Passage:
Spend Time in Prayer: Ask God to fill you with his Spirit so that your life will more consistently reflect true godliness.
A psalm of David.
1 Don't worry about the wicked
or envy those who do wrong.
2 For like grass, they soon fade away.
Like spring flowers, they soon wither.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good.
Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
4 Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart's desires.
5 Commit everything you do to the Lord.
Trust him, and he will help you.
6 He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,
and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
7 Be still in the presence of the Lord,
and wait patiently for him to act.
Don't worry about evil people who prosper
or fret about their wicked schemes.
8 Stop being angry!
Turn from your rage!
Do not lose your temper—
it only leads to harm.
9 For the wicked will be destroyed,
but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.
10 Soon the wicked will disappear.
Though you look for them, they will be gone.
11 The lowly will possess the land
and will live in peace and prosperity.
Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, forgive me when I focus more on success than on obedience; impress on my heart that lasting satisfaction only comes from an ever-deepening relationship with you.
