Win One for The Gipper

Key Bible Verse: And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again (2 Corinthians 5:15). Bonus Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:13-15

Dad's best-known film role was that of football star George Gipp. His most famous scene occurs as the Gipper is dying from an advanced strep infection. With his last few breaths, the Gipper tells Notre Dame head coach Knute Rockne (Pat O'Brien): "Someday, when things are tough, maybe you can ask the boys to go in there and win just one for the Gipper."

The deathbed conversation depicted in the film really took place. Gipp—one of the greatest all-around players in college football history—died on December 14, 1920.

Coach Rockne never forgot. Eight years later, when the underdog Fighting Irish played unbeaten Army, Rockne related the Gipper's last words in his pregame pep talk. "The day before he died," said Coach Rockne, "George Gipp asked me to wait until the situation seemed hopeless, then ask the team to go out and win one for the Gipper. Well, fellas, this is the day, and you are the team."

The Fighting Irish went out and won, 12 to 6, in an amazing exhibition of inspired football.

Personal Challenge:

  • How have you been inspired to exceptional performance by Jesus' death in your place?

Thought to Apply: It does not take great men to do great things; it only takes consecrated men.
