Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
Father Power!
Friday, October 3, 2003

Hey Dad,

We had a real boomer of a storm the other day. Debbie was gone, leaving me with the kids during naptime. I was busy at the computer when a thunderous CRACK rattled the house, which was followed by a blood-curdling scream.

It was Abe, our 2 year old.

"Oh great!" I thought. "There goes my afternoon."

Abe was at the top of the stairs looking into the dark sky.

"Scarewy," he cried several times.

He sobbed uncontrollably as I carried him to his bedroom and tucked him back into bed.

"It's okay, Abe. I'll lie here on the floor beside you."

As I did, he stuck out his open hand and I grabbed it. Immediately he quieted and closed his eyes.

Half an hour later, he was sound asleep, clutching my finger like a vise-grip. Periodically, he'd open his eyes to make sure I was still there and then drift back to sleep.

Staring into the sleeping face of my son, a deep sense of Father Power covered me. My son was sleeping in the midst of an incredibly violent storm because he knew his dad was beside him. My presence was more powerful to him than a million gigawatts of electricity and destruction. Wow!

As I lay there, I realized I was teaching my son about God. My boy would grow up knowing that God is always with him because I was there.

When he gets stung, I come. When he calls out at night, I come to his side. When he is sick and upchucks all over his bed and himself, I swoop out of the dark and hold him in my arms, clean it up, and then tuck him back into bed.

That's Father POWER with a capital P. It's felt by children from birth to adulthood. My kids need it—and so do yours. If we're not there for them, we handicap them and teach them that God isn't always there when they need Him.

And I guess that makes the only force greater than Father Power—the power of a missing dad.

So … be there!

You 'da dad!
