Hey Dad,

It's the day before Christmas. My kids can hardly stand the excitement. They know it's all about the birth of Christ, and remind one another about that fact, but it's awfully hard not to be excited about the gifts that will be opened. It's to be expected and probably the way it should be … because Christmas really is about gifts. It's about the gifts of hope and love, and the greatest gift of all: a Son who saved the world.

Still, I feel a little thoughtful this morning as the kids prance around … probably because we got the news a few days ago that a friend of the family died. What made it especially sobering is that he was a dad and left behind a wife and three college-age children.

I'm not sad for him … he's gonna have his first Christmas in heaven. It's thinking of his family that sobers me. His kids and wife of two decades will open presents around the tree without him. Dads leave huge holes when they're gone. Holes that will be felt … until they join him one day.

So dad, enjoy your family today and tomorrow. Give them your full attention, assemble the toys, give your opinion when they try on their new clothes, play their new games … and tell them over and over how much you love them.

Because … you never know what next Christmas holds for you.
