Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
Flower Power
Wednesday, April 7, 2004

Hey Dad,

Here it is, the week before Easter, and I still haven't taken down our Christmas wreath from the front of the house. That means I have two things to do before Easter: get rid of the wreath and run down to the Milford florist and order two corsages for the Wilson gals.

When my wife was a girl, her dad used to surprise all his women with fresh, spring corsages on Easter Sunday. A few years ago, I added the tradition to our family.

You should see Katherine's eyes (age 7) light up when I pin it on her. She thinks I'm wonderful. Now to a guy, a flower on a pin seems kind of dumb, but to a female, it is a token of affection from the man in her life for all the world to see.

Last year we were out of town, and I wasn't able to buy corsages. I was amazed how many women at my sister–in–law's church wore them. I watched as they adjusted their corsages, looked at their flowers, and then snuggled into their husband's side.

After the service, a tall guy tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Hey, Todd, I wanted you to know I got a flower for my wife like you said in the Familyman Weekly."

He pointed to the rose pinned to his wife. Then he noticed that my wife wasn't wearing one and his face went pale. "Where's your wife's flower?"

I started backpedaling, "Well, you see … uh, uh … I knew we were going to be out of town … (cough) and um … I just didn't think I'd be able to get one down here easily." I hoped I sounded convincing.

"It's an excuse," he said, "but not a very good one." He walked away, leaving me feeling scolded and embarrassed. Later, as I thought about it, I admired his boldness. It was an excuse … and not a good one. I should have done it anyway. He was right. We need more guys like that; dads, who won't let us clods get away with random acts of stupidness.

That's why I'm going to get the corsages no matter what and why I'm telling you to do the same. So, get down to the florist and pick up a corsage for the ladies in your house (it doesn't have to be expensive). Let the world see how much you love them.

You 'da dad!

[Todd]
