The Rest of the Story

Hey Dad,

Today, I'm going to tell you "the rest of the story" to demonstrate the great power we dads have over the lives of the people we love.

You may not remember, but six months ago I wrote that my precious and sweet, little daughter, Katherine, had become less than … precious and sweet. My little Tinkerbell needed a Tinkerbell–oscopy.

My diagnosis was that I was the cause of her downhill transformation. I had treated her harshly and insensitively, but I was determined to change that.

I have.

I know this might sound too good to be true, but I have my Tinkerbell back BECAUSE I am treating her like my Tinkerbell once again. I stroke her back when she cries, hold her on my lap, kiss her cheeks tenderly, and when she needs correction and discipline, I do so with a gentle, loving voice (most of the time).

EUREKA! It's working. She's begun responding to my gentleness by writing me notes and coming to my office to tell me that she loves me. She climbs up on my lap, wraps her arms around my neck, and buries her head in my chest.

You should have seen her this past Sunday. She asked to sit on my lap, and I agreed. As the pastor spoke, I held her tightly and whispered in her ear how much I love her. Katherine snuggled, kissed my neck about a hundred times, and stroked the back of my neck until I felt a little embarrassed by her outpouring of love.

Did I tell her to stop? NO WAY!

So here's the point, Dad. Do you know why she's gone from stand–offish to Miss Public Display of Affection?

Father power!!

That's the power we have over our children. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not done with Katherine. I still have to keep at it, because I can change her back just like that.

Dad, you have that power. You can take your child who is insecure and turn him around. You can take a cold, indifferent wife and help her to love again. You can do it … because you have the POWER.

It's never too late. Start today. Believe me; it's worth the hard work. And, it IS hard work. You'll have to give when you don't feel like giving, forgive when you've been wronged, and speak softly when you feel like yelling.

But you can do it! And you'll be glad you did.

You 'da dad! [Todd]
