A Championship Pillow Fight
Todd Wilson
Friday, March 24, 2006

Hey Dad,

I can't think of a better job than being a dad. It's times like last night that remind me just how good I have it. We had what you might call a championship pillow fight match. It had been a while since the last one, and I've got to confess that the last several times someone asked, "Dad, can we have a pillow fight tonight?" I put it off with the standard answer, "Not tonight, but we'll do it sometime soon."

But not last night. Last night, I said, "Sure." Minutes after the announcement, we had cleared a space in the family room and faced each other armed with pillows (foam not feather), ready to do battle.

Ike (6) and Abe (5) were pretty new at this game and "took" better than they "gave," but Sam (11) and Ben (12) thumped the daylights out of me.

I knew I was in trouble when Sam smiled and said, "Prepare to feel the sting of my pillow."

Ben, whom I used to topple with a few well-aimed thumps, swung his pillow like a pro and at one point called out to Sam, "You take care of the others, but the BEAST is mine!" Obviously he was under the delusion that he could whip his dad. But I quickly dispelled that myth.

By the time it was over, we all lay panting in a laughing heap of flesh and pillows. Man it felt good.

Then for some reason I thought of my dad, who was working late at the print shop he's owned since I was a kid. He was working late because he was working on a project for his son: me.

I wondered if he felt as glad to be a dad as I do. Although his son has grown up, he was still doing something FOR him, which isn't all that different from having a pillow fight WITH them.

That's when I knew that although he was probably tired, he was glad to be doing it, because he's still a dad, and dads love doing stuff WITH and FOR their children.

So Dad, if your kids are still at home, clear a room and have a good, old-fashioned pillow fight tonight. If your children are grown up, pick up the phone and tell them you were thinking about them today.

Be ye young or old, enjoy being a dad today.

You 'da Dad,
