Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
The Perfect Time for Dreams
Todd Wilson
Friday, May 5, 2006

Hey Dad,

In the three weeks since we began our RV travels, I've noticed that RVing brings out the dreamer in fathers. It usually happens as I'm talking to a fellow dad and he finds out that I'm traveling a chunk of the country with my family in the old Familyman Mobile. His eyes sparkle and there is an excitement in his voice.

"You know my wife and I have talked about traveling in an RV. It sounds like a lot of family fun," he says.

"Are you kidding?" I respond, trying to slap some good sense into his brain. "It's cramped; you break down alongside the road; you need to take out a bank loan just to fill the gas tank; and it brings out the BEAST in EVERYONE." But as I talk, my heart softens, and I finish by saying, "Yeah, it is fun. You should do it."

But then, the dreamer standing in front of me vanishes and the sparkle in his eye is replaced with a faint sadness as he rattles off all the reasons why his family can't. "The baby is too young; my wife is pregnant; things are pretty busy this year at work; the kids wouldn't appreciate it."

But I'm not licked yet and have a well-thought-through response.

"Sounds like the perfect time to do it. After all, life will never get any easier. In fact, the real danger as dads is that we'll put off all the good stuff until it's just too late. Then, all we'll have to show for our practical decision-making is a pile of regrets.

So, Dad, if you've been putting off a family vacation, a special project around the house, a trip of a lifetime, or some other family dream… Put it off no longer. Now is the time. Gather the family together and say, "We're going to do it."

Then get ready because it will be hard, stressful, and will bring out the BEAST in EVERYONE. And I wouldn't trade it for anything.

You 'da dad,
