Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
A Swallowed Hook and a Dad
Friday, March 9, 2007

Hey Dad,

I love it when I'm traveling along life's highway minding my own business, and God suddenly points out the window and says, "See that's what really matters, Todd."

That's what happened this past Sunday. I have to admit I felt half numb from corralling kids (my wife was home with a couple of sick ones) when something out of the ordinary caught my attention.

Halfway through our church service, during the time when people stand up and share how they saw God work the past week, Paul, a dad about my age, stood up holding his son in his arms—or maybe it was his coat. Anyway, his voice was full of emotion, the kind that comes from the gut, and that's what made my ears perk up. This is going to be a good one, I thought.

And it was.

He began his testimony with one of his all-time favorite memories. In fact, the memory that he shared with our little church took place over 15 years ago. It involved a day off from work, a big catfish that swallowed a hook, and his dad.

Good memories almost always include a dad.

As Paul retold the catfish story, his voice cracked as the emotion caught in his throat. Here was this grown man telling a story about his dad that happened 15 years ago, and he had to work to hold back the tears.

That's when God got my attention and said, "Remember Todd, that's what matters. What you choose to do with your children today will be cherished lovingly for decades to come. Many of their best memories will be with YOU."

Then God added one more little zinger.

"So make sure you're there."

Paul finished his testimony, but I've found myself thinking about the catfish and the dad ever since. You see, my fellow Dad, that is Father Power. And you've got 'da power.

I know you have a lot of important "stuff" to do. But let me remind you as God reminded me, "Make sure you're there."

You 'da Dad,
