Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly Just Show Up Friday, August 10, 2007
 1 of 1

Hey Dad,
The sun is shining, my children are great, my marriage is even better, and I feel on top of the world. Life just doesn't get any better than this.
Yeah, right!
Actually, the sun is nowhere to be seen. The air is heavy and gray. My kids are out spray-painting the bottom of a saucer-sled to look like the shell of a turtle, my wife does not like me a whole bunch, and I feel behind in everything.
You know, some super-dad experts would lead us to believe that fathering is easy, marriage is always a joy, and when life gives you a lemon … you get the point.
Being a dad and husband is hard and is not for the faint of heart. Kids are demanding, wives get upset, and life tumbles down on you like junk in an overstuffed closet.
But in all that, God is good to dads—especially this dad. Why? Because today, I get to be with the people I love the most (even when I don't like them much). Who knows what will take place in the next dozen hours? Maybe Maggie will smile sunshine into my heart with a warm kiss and hug, Ben will ambush me with a bear hug, or Ike will ask a deep question that only a dad can answer.
All I have to do is show up at the right address. I don't have to put on a fake face or be Mr. Happy Dad. But I do have to be there, even when the temptation is to pull out and bury myself in all the stuff that needs to be done.
It's times like these when we need other dads cheering, "Hang in there! You 'da Dad! You 'da Husband! You can do it!!"
So, my fellow overworked, under-appreciated, and sometimes ready-to-toss-in-the-towel dad, "Hang in there! You 'da Dad! You 'da Husband! You can do it!!"
You 'da Dad,
