Todd Wilson's Familyman Weekly
"Beware of Urgent Reef"
Friday, March 7, 2008

Hey Dad,

"Hoist the main sail …. swab the deck … lift the yardarm … raise the mizzenmast!"

This is my scurvy, sailor-side talking. I can smell the sea and feel the wind on my face as I man the ship's wheel while the captain, the Captain, calls out orders from above.

You see, we've just entered some choppy fathering waters. They are filled with dads who have run aground on that cursed Urgent REEF … reef … reef (echo into the distance).

The thing about Urgent Reef is that it seems so, well, urgent. I know in my life, we have less than three weeks until we all pile into the new Familyman Mobile for a three-month tour of duty. It was only yesterday that I got the remaining seats bolted in. I haven't checked out all the major systems, and I haven't even started the RV in five months! Did I say we leave in three weeks?!

The weather has been lousy, with snow and cold served up daily. In fact, I should be working on it right now; but here's the kicker: it's my son Abe's birthday today (7). I already took him to McDonald's for a birthday breakfast—and I'm supposed to take him and his brothers to a pizza/laser-tag place for lunch—and then he'll probably want to watch a fun video tonight and I have an RV to get ready!

"Steady as she goes, Mr. Familyman," The Captain calls.

"I know, sir, but I'm running out of time."

"Steady, lad. Keep your course straight. Take care of the important, and leave the urgent to me."

"I know, but I don't have time for birthday stuff!"

"Mr. Familyman, stay your course, or you'll run aground Urgent Reef. Enjoy your son's special day and forget the urgent, or I'll clap you in irons."

"Yes, sir."

So, I guess I gotta go. The RV stuff can wait, but my son's seventh birthday can't.

Before I sign off, let me warn you about Urgent Reef coming up on your port side. Don't let the tax season, a busy time at work, or some consuming project keep you from doing what's most important today.

If you listen to the Captain, I'm sure you'll hear him say, "Steady as she goes, lad."

You 'da Dad,
