I'm Sick, so This Is Short
Todd Wilson
Friday, September 19, 2008

Hey Dad,

I'm sick, so this is going to be short. In fact, I'm going to forgo my usual witty remarks and just say, "You guys bless me." I was over at the Familyman Forum when I read this post from "sjvnync" (I'm guessing that's not his real name). It spoke to my heart, and since I'm sick, it's an easy way to fill space.

"Guys, I am a dad of 7, well 6 now. I took my 20-year-old to Air Force Basic training today—Wow! I haven't had a flood of emotion like that since they were all born. We have the 20(b), 14(g), 12(b), 7(g), 5(g), 4(b), 2(g) and I love them all, as I am sure you all do.

"I felt regret, more than anything else, as I drove away today. I can remember being mad at the failures to perform his schoolwork, mad at the failure to do his chores, mad at all the times he let me down—now I am mad at me for spending so much time being mad.

"I had to write something to help heal my failures of recognizing his failure so much. Dads, please hold them close while they are with you. I wish I had some time back to 'do over' again."

Thanks, sjvnync; I needed that. I'm guessing (although my head is a little cloudy right now) that a bunch of other dads need it as well.

I gotta go blow my nose. Love those kids of yours, Dad.

You 'da Dad!
