Hey Dad,
Greetings from the repair bay at Felt's Truck and RV Repair in Russellville, KY. Yep, one of the great things about RVing is all the wonderful repair facilities you get to visit. Yesterday, we were on our way home from a week of speaking and recreating. The sky was blue, the RV was running great, and the horse had seen the barn.
All was well until I looked down at my temperature gauge and saw that it was super high. At first I thought it had to be a faulty gauge; it was fine just minutes before. But knowing that one should never ignore a gauge, I pulled over and shut it down.
A while later, a tow truck and an extra truck (to pull our trailer and haul our family) was on its way.
I expected the worse and was pleased as punch and praising God when they diagnosed that it was just a cracked hydraulic hose to a radiator fan. I was sure I had ruined my motor.
So now they're working, while we're waiting, and hopefully we'll be back on the road soon.
I'm feeling a little frazzled and can't make a smooth transition into something witty or insightful. So let me just get right to what I was going to write about before all of the above happened, and that's 'everything's better when everybody does it' (sounds like a Blue Bonnet butter commercial).
My son Ike (10) told me that last week. I think it was a normal night and we wanted something to do as a family. We couldn't think of anything creative so we got a movie that we had all watched several times.
Normally, after popping the DVD in, my wife and I will go do something productive, but for some reason we didn't and just sat watching the scenes we all knew and laughed at the lines we always laugh at.
It was a good night, but Ike was the one who showed me why. A few minutes later we were upstairs and he said to me, "It was fun watching a movie." He smiled and I smiled back and then he added, "It's funny how everything's better when everyone in our family is doing it."
"You're right," I said, and I have been thinking about that since. Family is better when everyone does it and funner when everyone in the family participates. It's like The Third Law of Family Dynamics.
It's the same for your family. Things are better when you do it ALL together. And although you can't always do it together, I bet you could plan something this weekend that everyone can do.
And you know what? The Third Law of Family Dynamics is true even when you're sitting in an RV repair shop … I think.
You 'da dad
