Hey Dad,
It's another blah day here in northern Indiana. It must be all that global warming that's making it so cold. I keep thinking that the sun's gotta shine and it's gotta get warmer one of these days, but it's just rainy and cold every day.
I think it's starting to affect my mood. I feel cold, gloomy, and Eeyorish inside. It doesn't help that every time I turn on the radio some expert is telling me that the economy will get worse, we're running out of fuel, the climate is changing, terrorists WILL get us, and pandemics are around every corner.
I'm telling you, the media is more poisonous to the average father than a truckload of rattlesnakes. The sludge they peddle causes us to doubt and worry and sucks the joy right out of our homes. Instead, we should trust God to meet our needs and enjoy our families today because that's all we got. Because if anything is running out, it's time.
My prescription for a media-antivenom is … a campfire. We had one the other night. We had some scrap wood to burn so after it burned down we cooked hot dogs, roasted marshmallows, and made s'mores. It didn't take all that much time, but something about the fire's warmth and smell slows us all down and highlights the joy of family.
A video night will do the same thing. Enjoy a fun family video (a double feature) or board game, apple cider, and popcorn. Better yet, make or order pizza, get some vanilla ice cream and toppings, fill the family room with pillows and blankets, put on your pjs, start a fire in the fireplace, and bask in the glow of God's goodness.
Because that's what it's all about … enjoying all that God has given you … today.
You are blessed, Dad, and nothing the media can dish out can ever take that away … just don't miss it by worrying about the future.
You 'da dad,
