Face Your Fear and Saddle Up Todd Wilson Thursday, November 11, 2010

Hey Dad,
After having speaking engagements just about every day for the last two weeks, we stopped for a little R&R (whatever that means for a dad -see PS) at Ft. Wilderness Campground in Disney World. After spending only one day in the park, I had half a mind to keep score of how many kids I saw crying or parents losing it (myself included).
You know somehow we dads have fallen under the delusion that for something to be GOOD, it has to be FUN. In fact, I was talking to a fellow dad at the pool who was just about fed up with the whole vacation scene. "They're just so hard," he said referring to his kids.
"Tell me about it," I said in agreement. "But it's the only thing that really matters."
He nodded in agreement and a little while later, we parted ways.
I know dads who would rather not go on vacation and avoid other activities…because it's just too hard with kids. They stay in the safe shallows of their comfort zone and miss the best. They choose EASY and miss the GOOD. What I want to say to them, you, and me is "Face your fear and saddle up anyway."
Sure it's a hard road, but it's worth it, so saddle up anyway. Plan the vacation, have another kid, do a family night, go out for ice cream, go bowling, roller skating, or take them hunting. They may cry, make it hard, and you might even lose 'it'…but it is still GOOD.
This is also a perfect lead-in to this year's 2011 You 'da Dad Daily Calendar. It has a cowboy dad theme of "DAD UP - Face Your Fear and Saddle up Anyway." It's an awesome calendar, and they go on sale today!
Well, I gotta go do some fun stuff. You can be sure that it will be hard…but GOOD.
You 'da dad,
