You're Not Getting Any More Time Todd Wilson Thursday, August 18, 2011

Hey Dad,
The air is brisk this morning, and I smelled just the faintest hint of fall as I walked outside … and I hate it. I'm not ready for summer to be over and school to be starting. I still have stuff to do … adventures to have. I need more time!
But the truth is: I'm not getting any more time.
I was thinking about that a couple evenings ago. After dinner I told the kids we were going to clean out the basement. Our basement is more like a root cellar: low ceilings, pipes that bump your head, dim lights, and a musty smell. It's dry, just not very glamorous.
To that picture, add 14 years of storage: clothes, coats, spare dressers and chairs, and treasures galore. Believe me, it's time to clean-up and throw out. That's when I was confronted by the time issue.
I was reshuffling, organizing, and stuffing things into crevices when it hit me that some of the stuff was wedding gifts or from our apartment and first house. That wasn't troubling, but then it hit me that my oldest son Ben (18) could need some of it in a few years.
As the thought hit me, it was like a scene from a movie where a sonic wave explodes, rippling across the countryside - HE'S ALMOST THE AGE I WAS … THEN.
I'm not ready for that. I need more time!!!!!!!
But the truth is: I'm not getting any more time. And neither are you, Dad. Our job is to savor the time today—to enjoy the interruption of young children who want to make messes, to enjoy big kids who don't seem to interact as much as they use to, to enjoy a battle of wills with our almost adult children, to enjoy the brief moments of interaction with our overworked wives, and to enjoy the remaining weeks of summer.
It'll be over soon … and we're not getting any more time.
Enjoy being 'da dad,
