Hey Dad,
Things have been a little trying in the dad-department for the last week or so. Sometimes it all seems … too hard, but this morning I was reminded again just how much kids need their dads.
I was sitting at the table reading my Bible when I saw a note that has been folded between the pages for the last 6 months. A dad handed it to me after hearing me speak … somewhere. As I read the words below, I got a lump in my throat.
"When I was 5 years old my dad died of cancer. That was 33 years ago. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. At times, the absence feels like a dull empty spot in my life that I hardly perceive. At other times it is a black hole of emptiness and an aching void from which I cannot escape. Sometimes it's simple things (that make me feel that way) like being at a men's retreat with my church a couple weeks back, around a bunch of other men. I wept that the most important man in my life could not be there.
While I'm a 38-year-old man with 4 great kids of my own, the 5-year-old boy still lives in me … I sometimes imagine what it would be like to see my dad again - to tell him about my life now with my wife and kids and to just embrace him in a moment where words cannot be spoken. It's almost too much to imagine. And while I know it can't happen in this life, I would pay any price for that chance."
There's the lump again.
That's FatherPower, Dad, with a capitol FP. You got it and your kids want it. Maybe you've been a little busy lately. Either tonight or this weekend, carve out some time for them and let them FEEL, HOLD, SNUGGLE, and EMBRACE … the POWER!
You 'da dad,
