I Needed That Todd Wilson Thursday, May 12, 2011

Hey Dad,
The sun is shining … finally. For the last several days, we felt like Noah in his ark … his dripping, leaking ark. I'm telling you, we have been in a torrential downpour from Tulsa to Atlanta. I've got drips dripping from spots that never leaked before … more items for my fix-it list. And yesterday morning, I noticed that one of my tires was flat.
God was gracious … again … and thirty minutes later we had a new (reasonably priced) tire.
Is it just me, or does life seem hard sometimes? The days seem gray, the problems unending … and then it gets harder. That's how it was last Saturday in Tulsa. Almost from the moment I woke up, things went from bad to worse. Oh, nothing was leaking, but everyone in my RV seemed to be mad at me.
I can't remember all the details, but my wife was upset, my children were on edge, and I was freaking because I had to speak in 30 minutes!!!!!! In fact, one of my kids did something, and I chewed him up and spit him out crying. Then, ten seconds later I apologized from the pit of my heart and he forgave me … but I was a quivering blob of a crummy dad as I gathered my notes and walked to the room where I was suppose to speak.
That's when God sent me a reminder of how good I had it. As I picked up my notes, a half sheet of paper slipped to the side. I LOVE YOU was printed in big red marker. I knew my son Abe (10) had written it because he's always writing me notes about how much he loves me. But somehow this particular note penetrated the gloom of my heart like a shot of sunlight.
"Todd," God seemed to say, "yes, it may be hard … but it is good and they love you … in spite of yourself."
Dad, parenting, marriage, or life might be hard right now, but let me remind you as I was reminded, "It is still GOOD."
You 'da dad,
