The Truck Man Todd Wilson Thursday, June 2, 2011
 1 of 1

Hey Dad,
Howdy from Shippensburg, PA. The last couple of days have been good; we visited Harper's Ferry National Park and the Antietam Battlefield - sight of the bloodiest day of the Civil War.
Seeing the old photos of dead men piled high in Bloody Lane and then watching my kids run and play in the same deeply worn lane is a little sobering. It's been 150 years since those sons and fathers died. Each one of those bloated and decaying bodies had stories, unrealized dreams, and unspoken words of love, as well as regretted words.
As I walked to Lowes with my sons Abe (10), Cal (5), and Jed (3) this evening, I noticed an old guy sitting in his truck in the Wal-mart parking lot. Although he wasn't dead and bloated yet, he was quite old as he sat watching my sons and I weave through the maze of cars.
Actually, I felt more like I was walking two dogs, tangled as they chased each other around me like a maypole. When I looked up and saw the old guy in the truck, I had to check my face to see if I was smiling or growling.
At that moment, we caught each other's eye. I smiled and nodded; he just stared blankly at us, but it was what he THOUGHT that caught my attention.
Oh, yeah, I have that power to read the thoughts of other dads.
"I miss those days," was all he thought, "a lot."
As I crossed the parking lot, I thought about his … thoughts and knew one day I too would miss these days of chaos, exhaustion, and walks across the parking lot with giggling boys.
And so will you.
You 'da dad,
