Crying Millionaires Todd Wilson Thursday, February 9, 2012

Hey Dad,
It just hasn't been the same ever since Extreme Make-Over: Home Edition left the airwaves. It was the only show my family watched on TV and we just so happened to stumble upon it during its last season of a nine-year run. It was a great show and my family would get teary-eyed as they listened to the family's sad story right before their new house was built, and I would get all teary-eyed … when the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team drove up in their incredible RV.
It's gone and we have nothing to replace it with. We've tried Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs try to sell their ideas to a panel of millionaires/billionaires. It's kind of fun to watch as people pitch their ideas and then "the sharks" either eat them up or invest in their idea. We've watched half-a-dozen episodes, but last Friday we saw something we hadn't seen before … a millionaire cry.
For those of you who've seen the show, it was the millionaire on the end with the Robin Williams hair. The show was progressing as usual with the successful panelist shredding the unsuspecting entrepreneur who came thinking he had an awesome idea. This particular guy had a product he wanted to manufacture entirely in America.
His Made-in-America card didn't play out so well, and the Robin Williams look-alike was one of the last guys to say, "I'm out (of the deal)." But the entrepreneur had done his homework and looked the unsuspecting millionaire in the eye and said, "That surprises me seeing how you're the son of a factory worker."
Within a minute, tears filled the millionaire's eyes (as well as a couple of the other panelists) as he told his dad's story of working in a factory. I'm telling you, I bet this was the first time any of those successful business people EVER shed a tear about anything on that show. Financial success doesn't bring out that kind of emotion. And it didn't come out because he thought about how hard his dad worked in the factory … but because he thought about HIS DAD who had passed away a year earlier!
That's FatherPower!!!!! Dad, you've got that power. Don't waste it on trying to be a shark. Spend it on your family. That's a sure-thing investment.
You 'da dad,
