Laurie's Seven Design Tips
Seven principles to consider when designing any room in your house.
By Laurie Smith

The following seven principles from Laurie's book, Discovering Home, Find Your Personal Style (Meredith Books, December 2005) describe the design philosophy she uses on "Trading Spaces," and are helpful tips to anyone designing a room.

Understand the Bones of Your Home — Take time to understand the architectural character of the spaces in your home.

Evaluate Your Space — How well do existing spaces work for the way you live? Examine function and flow and where changes are necessary.

Determine Your Layout — Furniture arrangement is the foundation of the design process. It can help you maximize space and improve traffic flow.

Find Your Inspiration —; This step is the soulful part of the design process. Find an inspiration piece in the room and use it to guide your plan.

Discover Color — Color preferences are personal and are a powerful design tool. Trust your instincts.

Consider Your Fabrics —; Fabrics are the easiest and most versatile way to introduce color, texture and pattern to your space.

Accessorize Your Rooms — Accessories reinforce the overall feeling of your space. Consider lighting, artwork, floor covers, wall color and even flowers to help breathe life into every room.

Next Issue: Coming in the January/February 2008 issue of MomSense: Laurie Smith shares her innovative design ideas with MOPS moms who are redesigning a problem room in their house.
