REEL NEWS
Gibson Sentenced; No Jail Time
Mel Gibson's DUI leads to fines, PSAs, and AA meetings; speculation continues about his actions and his future. Plus: Narnia updates; a Nativity book; more cast news in His Dark Materials; and more.

The fallout from his recent DUI arrest is still occurring, but at least Mel Gibson will be avoiding jail time. The actor and his lawyers met with prosecutors last week to plea bargain, reports The Los Angeles Times, and judges sentenced the actor to perform public service announcements and pay fines of $1,300. As part of the bargain, Gibson must also attend meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous.

"The quick resolution means that the Gibson case is pretty much over, unless a judge finds that he violated the terms of the deal," reports the Times, adding that Gibson is now on "three years of what is called 'supervised probation,' meaning that he has to return to court periodically to show that he is abiding by the terms of his probation."

Meanwhile, critics and commentators continue to speculate about the causes behind Gibson's actions—and what it means for his future in Hollywood. Entertainment Weekly columnist Owen Gleiberman questions why Gibson is "so mad," and even wonders whether the actor/director's anger was what led him to make The Passion of the Christ. Writes Gleiberman: "The simple explanation for why Gibson crafted his version of the Gospels is that he's a self-confessed sinner, and therefore an ideal candidate to tell the primal story of Christian redemption. I believe that, yet what makes Gibson a singular poster child for the temptations (and ravages) of sin is that when you consider what a widely worshipped Hollywood star he is, a man who can do pretty much anything he wants, he is by now so obviously ruled by his addictions that it's no great leap to say that they're filling a hole in his spirit."
