The upcoming film Amazing Grace, coming to theaters Feb. 23, has inspired
"The Amazing Change," a campaign that uses the movie, based on the life of Christian and abolitionist William Wilberforce, to stir people to speak out against modern-day slavery.
The movement—similar in concept to the successful
ONE Campaign, in its grassroots efforts to change the world—is timed to coordinate with the 200th anniversary of the slave trade coming to an end in Britain. A campaign leading up to the event will raise awareness about present instances of slavery, and will use the life and work of Wilberforce to challenge participants to mobilize against injustice.
Walden Media, which organized The Amazing Change, calls it an "international social justice campaign" with the ultimate goal of abolishing modern-day slavery. Components of the campaign include singing the cherished hymn; signing a petition to end modern-day slavery; interviews with pastors, church leaders, and abolitionists; video of enslaved peoples around the world; and interviews with historians, commenting on Wilberforce's work and the hymn that gives the film its name.
Participating in the campaign will be Christian recording artist Chris Tomlin, who recorded a new bridge to the hymn; and Eric Metaxas, author of the book Amazing Grace.
Meanwhile, the classic hymn "Amazing Grace" will be celebrated and sung around the world Feb. 18 on
Amazing Grace Sunday.
