While Spider-Man 3 and Transformers have broken box office records this summer,
the Jesus film has reached arguably a more important milestone—its 1,000th foreign-language translation, making it the most translated film in movie history.
The film—produced in the 1970s by
Campus Crusade for Christ—is used primarily as an evangelistic tool. More than 6 billion people have seen it, with over 200 million decisions for Christ as a result.
Jim Green, executive director of The Jesus Film Project, says, "Lanka Kol is our 1,000th translation of the Jesus film. It's a language many Americans have probably never even heard of, but there are more than one million people in India who speak Lanka Kol—and now we have the opportunity to begin sharing the gospel story with them in their own language."
The Jesus Film Project isn't stopping there; plans remain to translate the movie into an additional 500 languages, including every language with more than 100,000 speakers.
