Bill Maher's documentary about religion—Religulous—is already picking up steam and gaining a following, after footage from the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Variety reports that 20 minutes of the movie were shown, and that Maher and director Larry Charles answered questions, before a sold-out audience of 1,200 people.
Both men expect controversy as the film continues to gain momentum, with Charles calling the movie "pan-offensive." Maher adds: "People who say they're religious say they're humble, but they're arrogant, because they say they have all the answers."
Meanwhile, The Chicago Reader notes that Maher and Charles are quick to say that the film is not just a good-natured spoof. Charles says that while some films "poke gentle fun" at religion, he and Maher hope to "stab it to death."
Maher also draws parallels between religion and current political and social issues. "It's amazing to me how many evangelical Christians are okay with torture, considering how their boy got tortured so bad. But their Christianity isn't about morals or ethics, it's about saving their ass. They pray to Christ so that they can do whatever they want in this world, and he'll forgive and protect them in the next." Adds Maher, "We don't need a person of faith in the U.S. presidency; we need a person of doubt."
