Online Lord of the Rings communities have been ablaze with speculation over who will direct New Line Cinema's planned two-part adaptation of The Hobbit, particularly after Peter Jackson—who directed the Rings trilogy and was originally favored to direct The Hobbit—announced that he will be producing, but not directing, the pair of movies.
One name has come up in more than a few such discussions: Guillermo del Toro, director of Pan's Labyrinth, the dark, violent, Oscar-nominated fantasy film—and the filmmaker whom many fans hoped would be chosen to helm The Hobbit. Now The Guardian announces that del Toro has officially signed on to direct the two movies.
Del Toro is currently working on a sequel to his comic book adaptation Hellboy, called Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
No actors have yet been cast in the upcoming pair of movies, and no script has been written yet, due to the continuation of the WGA strike. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the project will certainly be put in the fast lane when the strike is resolved, with filming to begin some time in 2009.
