REEL NEWS
Darwin Biopic Gets New Title, Cast
Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly to star as Charles and Emma Darwin in upcoming biopic, rechristened Creation. Plus: A new director for Tarzan; four new movies from Guillermo del Toro; answers to global warming; a new Superman trilogy; Plus: Raimi, Maguire back for Spidey 4 & 5; and more.

Between Expelled and the upcoming Religulous, 2008 is proving to be a big year for the alleged clash between science and reason. The former film drew mixed reviews but enthusiasm from Christian moviegoers for its affirmation of Intelligent Design's plausibility, while the latter is reported to be a scathing indictment of religious faith from the standpoint of logic and rationality. But if documentaries aren't your thing, the same issues might once again be coming to the big screen as soon as next year, with the release of Creation—a biopic of evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin.

Though no release has been set for the film, The Hollywood Reporter says that casting has begun, with the real-life husband-wife duo of Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly starring as Darwin and his wife, Emma, respectively. Filming could start as soon as this month. Jon Amiel, of TV's The Tudors and 1999's Entrapment, will direct.

The project's mastermind is Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, who says, "John Collee's compelling script tells the remarkable story behind Darwin's revolutionary theory and the foundation of a book that changed the world. … We think of Darwin as an old man with a gray beard. The reality of our story is very different."

The film, previously known as Origin and based on the book Annie's Box by Randal Keynes, will also star Jeremy Northram, Toby Jones, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
