How do American soldiers stationed in Iraq celebrate America's Independence Day? Evidently, by watching a Vietnam War biopic. MGM Studios will screen their film Rescue Dawn for American troops on July 4, along with other special presentations.
The plan is for over 2,000 troops to see the film at Camp Anaconda, a U.S. base near the city of Balad. The movie tells the story of Dieter Dengler, an American soldier famous for being the only one to escape from a POW camp in the Laotian jungle during the height of the war. Actors Christian Bale, Steve Zahn, and Jeremy Davies will speak to the troops through taped messages, to be shown before the film.
MGM representative Rick Sands notes that, "Screening a film about Dieter's heroic life on Independence Day could not be more appropriate to show our thanks to the brave men and women overseas."
Directed by celebrated documentarian Werner Herzgog, Rescue Dawn also opens in New York and Los Angeles on the 4th of July, with a wide release to follow on July 27.
