The Married Disciples
From the Editors

For 11 years I have been preoccupied with the church news and theological controversies that find their way into Christianity Today magazine. And so when I gave up the title of managing editor of CT and moved upstairs to become the executive editor of Marriage Partnership, I heard some audible gasps from friends, as if to say, "What hath theology to do with marriage?"
A lot, actually. Whereas CT reports on what God is doing in the world, Marriage Partnership concerns itself with where God seems most active: in our daily lives, in our bedrooms and kitchens, in our hearts. Considering our recent cultural history, one can argue that married and family life is what the enemy has chosen as his prime battlefield. So I expect to continue to be preoccupied with God's great work today.
And it will be more honest work—or, at least, I will have to be more honest. Articulating the right doctrines and positions on issues is all well and good, but there is an awesome particularity about marriage that forbids rhetoric from getting too far ahead of reality. I may passionately defend fidelity, but when I forget the grocery list at home for the tenth time in a row (the lists that my wife, Karen, had spent her time carefully filling out) I cannot rest content with my marital orthodoxy (nor will Karen let me). I have found my marriage to be the primary context for God teaching me about love, forgiveness, my sin, joy, hope, and suffering—and I suspect this is true for most of us.
Sorting out the practical implications of following Christ in our married lives is what this magazine is all about. To illustrate that better, we have commissioned our design director, Doug Johnson, to redesign our logo, giving more prominence to the word we want to celebrate. Next, in coming issues, we want to expand on the topics we cover to include anything that helps today's Christian couples to dedicate their lives more fully and consistently to Jesus Christ—finances and health, spirituality and church life, ministry and vacations, even home decorating. I look forward to serving you in this new adventure.
