Removing the gallbladders of marriage
Caryn D. Rivadeneira | posted 9/30/2008 03:59PM

Exhausted from an afternoon spent spreading cypress mulch and pruning shrubs, trees, and rose bushes, my husband and I plopped down on the sofa to indulge in a guilty pleasure: television.

Let me just say this: we love TV, specifically cable TV. For those of you gasping in horror while envisioning our brains washing away in a torrent of cable TV smut, hear me out. How else could we peer over a surgeon's shoulder as he removes a gallbladder with a laparoscope—without first pulling bits of decidedly un-sterile woodchips from my ponytail? Where else would they let us enter the kitchen of a world-renowned chef and learn the benefits of adding a bouquet garni to stew—with our rottweiler sprawled across our laps? And try as we might, we'd never be able to tour three different historic homes and their inspiring gardens in the span of one lazy hour.

What I love about TV is that with a few clicks of a remote I can find answers—in an entertaining presentation—to questions I hadn't even thought to ask. And I love that my husband and I can learn about and discuss topics we probably never would've shared a book on (i.e., laparoscopic gallbladder removal)or taken the time to chat with an expert on (unless one of us needed that gallbladder removed!).

So when a friend of mine recently told me what she loved most about Marriage Partnership, I understood her completely. She appreciates that MP answers questions and shares information in an entertaining way that could otherwise only be answered by spending tons of time and money on books and therapy.

It's not that books or therapists or cooking classes, for that matter, isn't time and money well-spent. It's just that we don't always have a lot of either. We all want to be informed on topics as important as our marriages; how we get informed is the hard part.

This is what we strive to do at MP: to pack each issue with dozens of articles that are useful for your marriage—information that you want to know but do not have the time or resources to discover on your own. For the summer issue, we've included such topics as planning a family budget peacefully (p. 22), taking marriage-enriching vacations (p. 42), tragedy-proofing your marriage (p. 46), learning to fight fair (p. 52), and many more.

So, enjoy this issue and stay tuned for more.
