Real Heroes
Thank you for including "Our Journey into Twilight," by Robertson McQuilkin
[Fall 1996]. One summer, my then-boyfriend sent me the first article Dr.
McQuilkin wrote about his wife's struggle with Alzheimer's. My husband-to-be
added his own thoughts on the type of love and commitment he would seek to
bring to our marriage.
We've been married more than three years now, and it helps to look at Dr.
McQuilkin's commitment as an example of loving my spouse despite our
circumstances. Men like this are real heroes and examples to those of us
just beginning on the path of marriage.

Sexist about Sex
I'm disappointed with Melissa McBurney's answer to a reader's question
in the Real Sex column [Summer 1996]. She stated: "You're right, it's not
fair [that God made it easier for a man to reach orgasm]. But
think how
little would get done in this world if women were as obsessed with sex as
men are."
I asked my wife about that statement, and she said she thought it was a joke.
If it is intended as humor, it's quite a sexist statement. Do women feel
obliged to repay males for centuries of sexist behavior and inequitable treatment
by doing the same?

Man's Other Best Friend
While reading "The Most Important 15 Minutes of Your Day," by Sally Stich
[Fall 1996], I recalled the reason a business colleague gave many years ago
for why he bought a dog: "So there will be someone who is glad to see me
when I come home from work!"

Passing along a Laugh
Paul Kortepeter's article about cramped living quarters ["Close Encounters,"
Summer 1996] was perfect for me to give to a young couple who just got married
and will be living in a tiny place with only a kitchenette. They could use
some humor.

Don't Sell Out
My husband and I enjoy your magazine, but we're disappointed by your
growing fascination with celebrities. The older issues of Marriage
Partnership had topical cover stories, but the recent issues almost always
feature a celebrity on the cover. Please don't trade gloss, color and flash
for substance.

Makin' a List, Checkin' It Twice
My husband is always telling me that I keep a "list" of the things that
bother me about him or our house. But I've always flatly denied having such
a list. Imagine my surprise, then, after I read "Too Much 'Home Improvement'?"
by Tim Sutherland [Summer 1996]. I realized I was a high-maintenance person
and really did have such a list. My husband and I are going to take the article
to our counselor and show him exactly how we both act!

Anything but a Failure
As a pastor who does a lot of counseling, I really appreciated your interview
with Gary Oliver ["The Upside of Failure," Summer 1996]. I plan to use it
as I counsel couples who are in their second or third marriages.

Marriage on the Web
I was recently surfing the Worldwide Web and was surprised to find that
Marriage Partnership had a page. Thanks for providing a larger forum to get
some morality and sensibility into marriage.
