Grammy nominated and Dove award winner Kim Hill continues to explore her passions and define her distinctive voice, while reawakening her singer-songwriter side, by co-writing five of the eleven songs on her latest offering, Broken Things. Hill has turned up the volume and loosened the reins to make a new album that will make you wonder why she's waited so long to get back in the studio.

Broken Things fits the classic definition of an adult rock album, destined to become a favorite for all of her fans … especially those who favored her Grammy nominated Christian Rock Album of the year, Brave Heart circa 1991.

For the new project, Hill returns to her roots and for the first time in her 18-year career she recorded an album in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. Although born in Mississippi, she moved to Memphis at 11 years old and the musical variety in the city introduced Hill to a wide range of musical influences, Christian, Country, Folk, and Rock. During Hill's illustrious career, she's recorded a little of everything, from Country to Worship, so this new CD is basically a culmination of it all-- a roots rock album with strong overtones from a heart that's been healed through worship and continues to show her gift of eclecticism.

Hill has spent the last decade primarily leading worship at women's conferences, which she proudly claims as the "best years of her career and ministry". At this juncture, most people would expect her to retire her "rocker side" and continue to turn out live worship CDs or more intimate songs of comfort, but with the spirit of a true artist Hill won't take the easy path. As seen many times during Hill's adventuresome career, she takes yet another left turn and returns to her folk-rock roots … a la her Grammy nominated Brave Heart.

For the new CD, Hill has teamed up with Grammy and Dove Award winning rock producer, Paul Ebersold (Three Doors Down, Sister Hazel, Third Day) to record an album with nods to the '70s and '80s classic rock. Ebersold reminded Kim that those songs were simply crafted, not overproduced--songs that you could sing and turn up really loud while driving. Broken Things is full of original modern sounds with retro moments that are nothing short of timeless.

The lyrical twist on the songs featured on Broken Things come from leading worship at women's conferences all over the country for almost a decade. Hill has combined her own life's journey of pain and disappointment, along with the stories of the women she meets on the road, into very authentic, sometimes messy lyrics, that reflect reality. Hill believes that we all have some sort of brokenness in our lives and when we learn to embrace it … to be honest about it … we will emerge more whole. There's a popular saying about a lot of women in the American church today that unfortunately is true, "we're as sick as our secrets." Hill has experienced firsthand at these conferences and in her own personal life that being honest with others about our struggles, shame, and places of heartache actually opens us up to healing and restoration. Addressing the overwhelming needs of women in our culture, especially the Christian culture, has become the main focus of the songs on her latest offering.

To add more flavor and heartfelt connection to Broken Things, Hill asked some of her favorite artists to contribute to the new project and she was thrilled that all of them agreed to take part. Margaret Becker co-wrote "Wide;" Mark Lee of Third Day contributed two songs, "Lover of My Soul" and Deeper;" and Nashville favorites, Andy Gullahorn and Jill Phillips, contributed three songs that all pack a proverbial punch with their thought provoking, and yet differing, lyrical style. Closing out the CD is the intimate piano vocal, "Just the Same," written by Kate Miner. This is a song that Hill has always wanted to record since she first heard it in 1987.

While the needs of women were at the forefront of Hill and Ebersold's minds, Broken Things is by no means a "women's only" record. It's for every person who lives in this fallen world and hopes that their faith will survive their own "broken things" regardless of their size.
