Usually self-titled albums are reserved for debut artists. Why did you go this route with your new album?

Michelle Tumes: I had no idea that self-titled albums were reserved for debut artists. I went this route because the songs depict my relationship with God. Each song has a different theme with strong overtones of a journey as a Christian. My hope is that people listening will be able to connect their life stories with these songs. I feel that the peace of God is a language that we all understand and it can manifest itself in music. I would be so happy if this music reflected even a glimpse of this.

This album sounds like a "return" of sorts. Were you uncomfortable with the direction your music was taking at your previous label?

Tumes: Yes, this album is definitely a return to the style of music I am very comfortable with. I don't feel that my previous label ever forced me to sound a certain way. In fact they signed me based on the style of music that created my first album, Listen. I think the last album was the culmination of a carefree time before September 11, moving to California, and working with different producers.

You're doing music independently now. Is it tough to make things happen without the support of a major label?

Tumes: We actually made the album and presented it to labels, and then decided to release it independently. The comfort of a major label is very appealing. I learned so much from my previous label. If I were a new artist, I feel it would be very different.

Christian music is at a different place now than where it was when you first started. What are the challenges of "selling" your music to listeners nowadays?

Tumes: I feel that my music has always been a bit different, so I am in the same position as I was during the first release. The challenges for me are to follow what I feel God has given me musically, and he will take care of the rest. The strength from God keeps me from worrying about this.

You strike me as a "beach" person. What kinds of things inspire your songwriting?

Tumes: I love the beach; in fact it is one of the reasons we moved to California. The sounds of the ocean and the way the sunlight hits the water really inspires me. It is also so expansive and a beautiful creation from our heavenly Father, and it connects me to memories of home.

What song on your new album are you most proud of and why?

Tumes: That is so difficult! "Gypsy Heart" is a song that will probably never be a single, but it describes someone who is looking for happiness away from the heart of God. I love the stories of writers such as C.S. Lewis, so I decided to write an allegory. Nothing can take the place of the peace that Christ brings, and this song speaks about a longing to be home in the arms of the Father. I feel that Adam felt like this after knowing the separation from God. Sometimes our tears can make us tender and receptive to love, so we can metaphorically sail into the arms of God in our contrition. It is that unconditional and perfect love that causes us to know that we are home.
