There don't seem to be as many artists in Christian music today catering to teens as there were five years ago. Do you feel like a lone voice?
Britt Nicole Definitely not. If you are willing to write about your experiences—your pain, your happiness, your fears, your regrets—if you are willing to be real and transparent, you will be a voice to your peers. Teenagers can spot a fake from a mile away, which is sometimes a scary thing. They want real, and that's what I will always strive to be.
How can teens develop a heart for serving others, especially in our self-centered "me first" culture?
Britt Nicole By serving. There is no better feeling in the world than giving to someone who can never give back.
When I first moved to Nashville, I had to get a part-time job to support myself while working on my music. I asked God to place me somewhere where he could use me. I heard God speak to me about working in a nursing home. I was like "Are you sure, God?" But I ended up working at Morningside Assisted Living Home for seven months and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I was so blessed and I will never forget the friends I made through it.
The coolest thing about that whole season was that people began to stop me in the mall, gas station, wherever, and they would tell me that they saw Jesus in me. Jesus came to serve, and if we are to be like him, then we must serve.
Your parents divorced when you were very young. Did that affect your faith in any way? Did you ever rebel as a result?
Britt Nicole It did affect my faith. It made me realize that I needed more than just family; I needed Jesus. My parents were divorced when I was seven and that was the same year that I gave my heart to God. So no, I don't think that I ever rebelled because of the divorce, but it has affected my life in a huge way. I was very bitter toward love for a long time. I was angry with my parents, and I looked for love and acceptance in relationships. I think that some of this was a result of the divorce and not having my father in the home.
How's your relationship with your parents now?
Britt Nicole Today it's great. I have amazing, godly, supportive parents. I love them with all my heart.
What are your expectations for Say It?
Britt Nicole I want it to speak to people where they are. I want them to take away faith, hope, trust, freedom, fun … I want them to take away so much. I just wrote from my heart and prayed that God could use these songs to change lives, and he is doing that.
What song on Say It resonates with you the most, and why?
Britt Nicole "Don't Worry Now." I'm always learning to trust God, always learning to trust that he is who he says he is, and that he loves me with an unconditional love that I will never understand. He wants the best for me, and he doesn't want me to worry or fear.
