Jennifer Knapp Dinner at Jen's Place!
interview by Michael Herman
posted 12/17/01

So is it Chef Knapp or Officer Knapp? We subjected Jennifer to our quirky questions and got some surprising answers. Casual ice skaters, you have been warned.

What three words best describe you?
Suspended, serious, and casual.

What three words best describe your new album, The Way I Am?
Vivid, purposed, and driving.

Your lyrics ask a lot of questions — what's the biggest question you ask on The Way I Am?
It approaches the answer to the question of how the crucifixion can sustain faith.

You're into sports. What teams do you follow and what sports have you had time to play recently?
I follow the K.C. Chiefs, even though I don't always want to. Don't get me started on Dick Vermeil (coach). I've taken up running this year, but I haven't really done much in the past few months.

If you weren't a musician, what profession would interest you?
Maybe a short-order cook or something in social work & psychology. I could probably be happy just dusting phones or something like that for a while too.

What's something you'd like to try someday?
Learn to ice skate and check people into the boards. Something about tackling people seems to appeal to me. Is that bad?

What are some of your pet peeves?
Tardiness, having to deal with confused people around me, and slow drivers in the left lane.

What's something you've learned about being a full-time musician that most people wouldn't know?
There's far more service involved than simply being a musician doing music. Especially as a Christian musician, there's often a strong pull to be all things to all people.

When are you most productive?
1:00 am – 2:30 am.

What are some of your favorite cities to visit and why?
San Francisco, because of the rocky Pacific west coast environment and because of the great food and Chinatown. Also New York City, specifically Manhattan. I can be small and anonymous there yet still feel powerful because I can get around such a big place on my own.

What's something from this past month you'd like to do over?
I would've called the doctor sooner before all of the bad pain started from the kidney stone I had.

What's a great lesson you've been taught?
This too shall pass.

Who's an artist you'd like to see receive more exposure?
Patti Griffin and Ashley Cleveland.

What's your favorite coffee drink?
Double-shot espresso macchiato.

Do you have a hidden talent?
I'm a good cook … people have said that to me at least.

What language would you like to be able to speak?
French or Italian. Latin too, even though I couldn't use it a lot.

What's something you could only tolerate if your future spouse really liked it?
His cooking. But I really hope he'll be able to cook.

Do you collect anything?
I have a small collection of stuffed elephants that have been given to me as gifts.

What would you like less of in your life?
Less need to clean my house.

What job would you like to do for a day?
Los Angeles police officer.

When was the last time you were nervous?
Yesterday, I don't want to say why … I'll just say yesterday.

If you could meet any person in history, who would it be?
Abraham Lincoln or Julius Caesar.
