Rebecca's Reflections and Resolutions
interview by Michael Herman
posted 01/07/02
With a new album on the horizon (releasing Feb. 26), Rebecca St. James is also gearing up for a new tour this spring. Packed with familiar favorites and a few new tracks, Worship God merges Rebecca's signature modern pop/rock sound with a heart for worship. What's going on with Rebecca these days? What interests her and what might she do if given the chance? We stopped her for a moment in the midst of her busy schedule to discover where she's at in her life.
What are some of the themes that are a part of your upcoming album, Worship God?
God's love, resting in Him, the peace of worship, celebration.
What song from the new album speaks to you most right now?
"Quiet Me With Your Love," which is taken from Zeph 3:17 about resting in Him.
How about three words that best describe you at this point of your life?
Busy, hopeful, receptive.
What's something you hope to accomplish or do better in 2002?
Resting and being more balanced I'll be able to take 6 months off this year, four months at one point and two others at another point of the year. Totally unrelated, I'd also like to be better at swing dancing.
Was your approach to a worship-focus album different than past projects? How?
I had a group of songs in my mind already as I approached this new project. I hadn't been thinking about who wrote each of them they were simply songs that spoke strongly to me. For the original songs on the album, I felt free to be even more biblical in writing them because the project is solely focused on worship.
If you weren't a musician, what profession would interest you?
Missions work and drama/acting.
If you could be any age again for one week, what would it be?
Eight, because you're not thinking about much. You're just enjoying life, with no responsibility.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Being called a great daughter by my parents, a great friend by my friends.
When are you most productive?
9-10 pm.
What song (not necessarily your own) best describes your life?
"Consuming Fire" by Third Day.
What are some of your spiritual gifts?
Serving, leadership, giving.
What's something from this past month you'd like to do over?
I wish I could redo the 2nd part of the tour without being sick.
If you could write a sequel to any movie, what would it be?
While You Were Sleeping or The Wedding Planner.
What artist would you like to see receive more exposure?
Earthsuit (Sparrow Records).
What's a great lesson you've been taught?
A life lived in fear is a life half lived (from some movie I watched).
Do you have a hidden talent?
I'm a great house cleaner because I used to clean professionally with my mom.
What is the one item you own that you would never throw away?
My albums of childhood photos.
What language would you like to be able to speak?
Romanian, because I've spent some time there.
What's something you could only do if your future spouse really liked it?
Sky diving, and even then it would be a tough sell for me.
What would you like less of in your life?
Traveling it really wears me down.
What job would you like to do for a day?
I'd like to be an actress at least one who's working, not an "actress" who's waiting tables at a restaurant. Because then I would've said "waitress."
When was the last time you were nervous?
I recently did a duet with Phil Keaggy, "Your Love Broke Through," for an upcoming Keith Green tribute recording. It was a little unnerving to sing it in front of Melody Green and Randy Stonehill (who co-wrote it with Keith).
If you could meet any person in history, apart from Jesus here on earth, who would it be?
Mother Theresa.
