Christian pop vocalist Natalie Grant has joined the Administration for Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to form the Nashville chapter of the Rescue & Restore Victims of Human Trafficking Coalition. The initiative is part of a national network of centers dedicated to raise awareness and provide training among those most likely to encounter victims of human trafficking. Newcomer Britt Nicole is currently featured in the "Next Big Thing" new-artist promotion at iTunes, offering the singer's debut Say It at a special price of $5.99 from July 23 through August 7. In conjunction with this effort, fans can also download her hit "You" for free at her official website.
Folk-pop singer/songwriter Bebo Norman has parted with Provident and signed a new recording contract with BEC Recordings, home to popular acts like Jeremy Camp, Kutless, KJ-52, and Jadon Lavik. Under the new agreement, Norman will release his first seasonal project, Christmas
From the Realms of Glory, on October 2, as well as a regular studio project sometime in the spring of 2008. Additionally, Norman will co-headline the 50-city Pages Tour alongside acoustic duo Shane & Shane.
The Christian Music Trade Association and the Christian Booksellers Association released a joint, nationwide study titled Sound Decisions, a report aimed at helping Christian retailers understand music buyers, trends, and how to expand their business. Some of the findings of the proprietary study shed light on the importance of quality of music selection, the buying power of music consumers, and the retail potential of youth and ethnic customers. A copy of the study can be purchased here, though non-members of the CBA may find it a bit pricey.
Canadian foursome Downhere has made available an album of rarities and demos titled Thunder After Lightning. The songs are leftover tracks and rough cuts that didn't make the final cut of Wide Eyed and Mystified. "While we value the quality of a full blown recording, we think that our little demos have a special value alone," said the band in their newsletter. The exclusive set can only be obtained through iTunes, the band's record label, or at shows.
South African trio Tree63 will issue Sunday!, their fifth album, on September 25 via Inpop Records. Produced by Joe Baldridge (dc Talk, Family Force 5), this new release also features the band's original drummer, Darryl Swart. Sunday! finds the group moving away from worship-styled songwriting to an approach that tackles social and spiritual issues. According to frontman John Ellis, "Christians need to be socially conscious because Jesus was."
Acclaimed husband-and-wife duo Over the Rhine returns August 21 with the release of The Trumpet Child, the group's ninth album and first on their self-owned Great Speckled Dog label imprint. The album mixes folk, jazz, and cabaret music, along with lyrics culled from the couple's love of literature, world events, and faith. Over the Rhine will support The Trumpet Child with a 21-city tour that kicks off August 31 in their hometown of Cincinnati.
