The Scoop
Fans injured at Starfield concert; Why Jordin Sparks missed the Dove Awards; Switchfoot visits Narnia; and much more.
By Andree Farias
posted 04/28/08

Last Friday, more than forty concertgoers were injured at a show headlined by Canadian worship band Starfield when the floor of the hosting church collapsed and caved into the basement. At least three people sustained serious injuries. According to concert attendee Connor Madden, Starfield frontman Tim Neufeld warned the crowd to stop jumping mere seconds before the floor gave way, hurling dozens of teenagers into the basement of Central Heights Church in Abbotsford, B.C. In an online statement, the band has asked that we join them in keeping the injured in prayer.

Billboard reports that Jordin Sparks has abandoned the opening slot of the recently launched Alicia Keys tour due to an acute vocal cord hemorrhage. The ailment forced last year's American Idol champ to cancel a series of ancillary appearances, including an Earth Day concert in the country's capital and a Michael W. Smith tribute performance during last week's 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards. According to a representative from her label, "Jordin is on a vocal rest, but she's expected to make a full recovery and join Alicia on tour in May."

The filmmakers of the Ben Stein movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed are getting sued by the John Lennon estate — made up of Lennon's two sons, widow, and music publisher EMI Blackwood Inc. — for using "Imagine" without authorization. The plaintiffs filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan in hopes of getting the film to stop using the song, plus other unspecified damages. According to Reuters, the Expelled producers said the song's use is justified because of the film's purpose as an avenue for commentary and criticism.

Steven Curtis Chapman and five others were inducted into the Music City's Walk of Fame during an outdoor ceremony in the Hall of Fame Park in downtown Nashville on April 20. This year's honorees, which also included Hank Williams Sr. and Kirk Whalum, received sidewalk plaques that were installed on Demonbreun Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Chapman joins a shortlist of inductees that includes Jimi Hendrix, Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Wynonna Judd, Emmylou Harris, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Reba McEntire, and Michael W. Smith.

Switchfoot has recorded a new song called "This Is Home," which will be used during the closing credits of the upcoming film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, releasing in theaters May 16. "The Narnia stories have a really special place in my brother Tim and my lives," said frontman Jon Foreman. "Our dad used to read them to us at bedtime when we were boys. Our imaginations were shaped on these amazing novels." The track will be available May 13 on the film's accompanying soundtrack.

In other Switchfoot news, the band is joining hands with Third Day, Jars of Clay, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band for the Music Builds Tour, a fall trek set to kick off August 21 in Detroit. One dollar from every ticket sold at each show will go to benefit local Habitat for Humanity chapters, as well as proceeds derived from ticket auctions, certain merchandise items, and special tour packages. Tour-specific content will be provided by MySpace's Impact channel. Tickets go on sale May 16 at Live Nation.

In between recording sessions for its as-yet-untitled fourth album, Underoath struck up a deal with Xbox to go head-to-head with gaming fans worldwide. Through mid-May, all six members of the band will be playing in real-time the games Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare with fans on the interactive network Xbox Live, as part of the portal's "Game with Fame" series. In other Xbox tie-ins, gamers can read blogs from the studio, check out the Underoath featured page, and sign up to win games and other goods.
