International Justice Mission, a human rights group that rescues victims of oppression around the world, announces the success of its first annual Nashville benefit, attended by 300 guests from a variety of backgrounds, including the recording industry and the law community.
During the event, Steven Curtis Chapman and Chris Tomlin debuted a song they wrote about IJM's work called "Let Justice Roll." Members of the band Diamond Rio also performed, as did Ruth McGinnis.
In his keynote address, IJM President Gary Haugen said, "Tonight has just confirmed what we believed all alongthat people in this community care about the hurting and want to do something to help." Haugen described several victims of oppression IJM has worked to free in recent months. He told the story of a 70-year-old man named Narakalapa who was held as a bonded slave his entire life. This year IJM secured his release, along with his children and grandchildren and dozens of other slaves.
"Our staff people were there to share the first moments of freedom Narakalapa ever experienced," Haugen said. "It's moments like this that keep us seeking justice for the oppressed and defenseless around the world."
The host committee for the Nashville benefit included Michelle and Joe Ed Conn, International Justice Mission; Wally Dietz, Bass, Berry & Sims, PLC; Tim DuBois, Universal South; Gary Glover, The Glover Group; Terry Hemmings, Provident Music Group; John Huie, Creative Artists Agency; Doug Johnston, Barrett, Johnston & Parsley; Lynn Morrow, Stokes Bartholomew Evans & Petree, P.A.; Dan Raines, Creative Trust, Inc. and honorary chairs, Tim and Mary Wipperman.
IJM is a Washington, DC-based group of human rights professionals who rescue victims of oppression including child slaves and victims of forced prostitution and illegal imprisonment.
IJM has been featured on Oprah!, 60 Minutes II, NBC Nightly News, Washington Post and in the coming months, on NBC Dateline. To learn more visit www.ijm.org.
